RPM Speed Rope 2.0

Last year at the NorCal Regionals I got one of the original RPM Speed Ropes. While I liked it, I didn’t exactly love it. It was awkward at first, and that Mother Effer hurt when I missed, which was a lot. It took me a good while to get used to it, and a lot of whip marks, but eventually I got decent enough with it to make it my go-to rope. The more I used it, the better I got with it. I’ve had my eye on the 2.0 version for a while now, so I was excited when they asked me if I would review their new rope. I’m glad to report that the new rope is even better than the previous model, by a lot! I actually love this rope. Yes, I’d marry it. Here’s my impressions.
This rope is really fast! I’m not a world record double under setter like this dude, but you can definitely tell how fast this rope is. Every person that picked it up to try it noticed how smooth, and fast the rope was. This makes each double under take less effort, in turn making it easier to set world records. So I’m actually not that impressed with that guy now. I’m kidding, that shit’s impressive!
Compared to first RPM rope (1.0?),the new one is noticeably lighter. It almost feels as if you are holding nothing! This is awesome because this greatly reduces wrist, and shoulder fatigue. I recently dislocated my shoulder, and I was able to do double unders virtually pain-free! I would go as far to say that I was actually shocked because of that fact alone. Using other ropes I can definitely feel a pain in my shoulder, and I get shoulder fatigue way faster. I literally have zero issues with the RPM rope. It’s almost magical.
The first version came in black only, but you could have a name engraved on the side. Now there are a handful of cool colors to choose from, and as colorful as us CrossFitters are, it’s nice to be able to personalize our stuff. And like I’ve said before, it’s all about how you look. I liked the green the best, but that’s just me. You can also get a logo printed on the handle which is cool. It runs about $10 per handle.
All metal, no caps!
The new handles are all metal as opposed to the last model that had plastic caps at the end. I can’t tell you how many times I had to search the gym for those things! So when I saw that they got rid of them, that was enough for me to want to make the switch! Plus the bearings are not just loose, so it’s also way easier to make adjustments if you need to. I’m not the handiest guy, so if I say it’s easy, it’s easy!
Takes a bit to get used too
We have a bunch of Rx Ropes at the gym, and I would have to say starting out they are probably easier to be able to get your first double unders with. That being said, they also take more of a toll on your shoulder and wrist. The RPM rope takes a little pratice and patience to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, its well worth it. I guarantee you’ll improve your WOD times that include double unders.
Ok if there is one negative to this rope, it’s that holy shit it hurts when you whip yourself. It really is just a metal wire so it’s going to be coming fast when it comes in contact with your skin. I try really hard to pretend like it didn’t happen, but when it does, I cry on the inside. On the plus side, it does force you to really focus, and get good at double unders so you won’t miss! So that’s a good way to turn a negative into a positive.
This is without a doubt the best jump rope that I have used. Even while being injured, my double unders have improved significantly. With all of the new enhancements, and the ability to get different colors, I’m confident in telling you to take the plunge and order one of these ropes right now! So do it already!
