How to Lose Weight

I get asked all the time by people how can lose more weight. It’s by far the biggest reason people join my gym. Joining a gym is a great first step to the road of getting that awesome 6 pack that you want, or had back in High School. But working out isn’t the only piece of the pie. In fact, you can’t have very much pie at all if you want to lose the LBs. I used to think that I ate pretty good, and since I worked out a lot I could cheat here and there. Well, then I cut out sugar and started weighing my food and I lost 14 lbs in 2 months. Obviously there is a few more pieces to the puzzle than just consistently working out. So what are the most important things you need to do to lose weight? It’s really not that complicated, and I’m gonna tell you!

There’s just no way around it. The quality of your diet has the biggest impact on whether or not you are going to lose the weight you want. I’m not talking about just going on a diet here. I’m talking about the kinds of foods, and drinks, that you put in your body. Some foods enhance your metabolism, some foods shut it right down. Unfortunately, the foods that kill your metabolism happen to be the most delicious. In a perfect world, someone would have invented a Pizza that promoted weight loss. I will continue to be hopeful for that, but I don’t think I will live to see that day sadly. The reason food that is shitty for you tastes so damn good is because food companies spend millions of dollars on finding ways to make their products as addicting as possible. Think about it, when was the last time you where craving a carrot? I didn’t think so. How about the last time you where carving a Double Western Cheeseburger from Carls Jr? Mmmmmm, those are soooo good. I can just taste it thinking about it. You think I’m kidding. I’m dead serious. The people who run fast food companies are geniuses! They make people crave the food that is making them fat, and killing them. I wish I had that kind of influence. The bottom line is this, if you want to lose weight you have to cut out ALL the crap. That’s the breads, the pastas, the cookies, the cakes, the candy, the grains, and basically anything else that’s delicious. If it’s that tasty, I can guarantee it’s making your ass bigger.

Calories In vs. Calories Out

This one should be a no brainer, but lets discuss anyway. In order to lose your spare tire, you need burn more calories than you consume. Super simple right? Not so fast. Lets say I give into my craving and go to Carl’s Jr and get my Double Western Bacon Cheese Burger. I work out a lot, I deserve it, and I’m sure I totally burn that off working out anyway. So I order my cheeseburger, and of course I’m getting fried zucchini, and I don’t drink Soda, but for S and Gs lets just say I get a Coke. (I’m actually laughing while I write this because I usually order WAY more than that, but shut up I work out a lot) Ok so let’s do the math:

Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger – 920 Calories, 14 grams of sugar

Fried Zucchini – 330 Calories, 7 grams of sugar

Medium Coke – 250 Calories, 68 grams of sugar

Total Calories – 1,500 Calories, 89 grams of sugar

Now lets say your favorite form of exercise is running on a treadmill, you can expect to burn somewhere around 500 calories per hour. If we do the math, and divide 1500 by 500, that means you only have to run on that treadmill for 3 hours to burn off that delicious Carls Jr. 3 Hours…of running… If your anything like me the only way I’m running for 3 hours is if something is chasing me, and I’ll be honest, If I knew that I’d have to run for 3 hours to get away, I’d probably just give up and let it catch me and eat me. Food labels are deceptive. You ever look at those things. Ice cream may say it’s only 130 calories per serving, but have you actually measured a serving size? You ingest 130 calories just by smelling it. To me a pint of Ben and Jerry’s is one serving size, according to Ben and Jerry’s, a pint has 4. Pssssshhhhhhhhh.  You need to pay attention to food labels, and make sure you really know how many calories are going into your body. Get a scale, they’re cheap on Amazon. You’ll be surprised how small a serving size really is. What I thought was one serving of natural peanut butter was actually 3! Thats a 400 calorie difference.

Finally, another no brainer, you need to be active. You need to find something that will get you off your ass and moving. For me, it’s CrossFit. For you, it might be synchronized swimming. There are a million different ways you can burn extra calories. A Million!! I counted. Finding a way to mix strength training with some sort of conditioning work is best I believe. People that tend to stick to one or the other don’t look as good as people who mix it up. Don’t believe me? Look at Sprinters, those dudes are fit. They do it all, run and lift. But whatever you do, don’t think you can sit on your ass watching re-runs of Seinfeld all day and hope get in good shape. It takes some work, but it will be worth it. Living a longer and healthier life is definitely worth the effort.
